South Korean law enforcement authorities have uncovered a disturbing trend where individuals are being hired through encrypted messaging apps to carry out ‘revenge’ attacks using human waste, with payments made in cryptocurrency. According to police reports, several suspects were arrested for smearing excrement on the front doors and vehicles of victims after being recruited on platforms like Telegram. The use of digital assets such as Bitcoin was intended to provide anonymity for both the clients seeking retaliation and the perpetrators performing the acts. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency indicated that these incidents often stem from personal grudges or online disputes, which have escalated into physical harassment facilitated by the dark web and untraceable payment methods. Charges against those involved include property damage, intimidation, and violations of stalking punishment laws. Authorities are now increasing surveillance on online forums that market these illegal ‘retaliation services’ to prevent further escalations of violence.
