U.S. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA), the ranking member of the House Oversight Subcommittee on National Security, has initiated a formal investigation into a reported $500 million financial transaction between entities linked to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and World Liberty Financial (WLF), a private equity firm reportedly associated with former President Donald Trump’s inner circle.
The probe focuses on the origin and structure of the substantial foreign investment, raising critical questions regarding potential conflicts of interest, compliance with U.S. anti-corruption laws, and national security risks stemming from the influx of foreign capital into firms connected to former high-ranking American officials. The deal, allegedly facilitated through sovereign wealth funds tied to the UAE government, has drawn heightened scrutiny due to the timing of the investment following the transition of presidential power.
Khanna’s office confirmed that letters have been sent to WLF executives, as well as to the U.S. Treasury Department, demanding immediate access to relevant documentation. These requests cover due diligence reports, communication logs concerning the deal’s negotiation, and detailed records demonstrating compliance with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) regulations.
In a statement accompanying the launch of the investigation, Khanna emphasized the need for absolute transparency. “When foreign governments inject enormous sums of money into the businesses of former American political figures, Congress must ensure that ethical lines were not crossed and that U.S. foreign policy was not leveraged for personal financial gain. This investigation seeks to uncover the full scope of the UAE’s influence and the role, if any, played by administration associates in brokering this $500 million deal.”
