Federal prosecutors have filed a civil forfeiture action to seize approximately $327,000 in the cryptocurrency Tether (USDT), which is alleged to be the proceeds of a ‘pig butchering’ scam. The legal action follows an investigation into a fraudulent scheme where a victim was lured through a dating application into investing in a fake cryptocurrency platform. According to court documents, the victim was manipulated into transferring significant sums of money, which the perpetrators then laundered through various digital wallets. The FBI managed to trace a portion of these funds to an account controlled by the fraudsters. This move is part of an ongoing effort by the Department of Justice to recover assets for victims of international cyber-enabled financial fraud and to disrupt the infrastructure used by crypto-scammers.
