Nifty Gateway, one of the earliest and most high-profile curated NFT marketplaces, has announced it will officially wind down its operations. The decision marks the end of an era for a platform that was instrumental in popularizing digital collectibles and bringing high-value drops to the mainstream.
Founded in 2018 and subsequently acquired by the Winklevoss twins’ company, Gemini, Nifty Gateway quickly became known for its exclusive ‘drops’ model, hosting landmark sales from renowned artists like Beeple and Pak, and attracting significant institutional interest during the 2021 NFT boom. Its focus on curation and KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance set it apart in the early decentralized landscape.
The closure comes amid a prolonged bear market in the broader crypto and NFT space. Trading volumes have plummeted since the 2021 peak, making continued operational overhead unsustainable for platforms that relied heavily on primary sales commissions. The marketplace confirmed the cessation of services is a necessary restructuring move following significant market contraction.
Nifty Gateway has assured its user base that all previously purchased NFTs remain secure. Since the assets are stored on the blockchain (primarily Ethereum) and not centrally held by the platform, users retain full ownership and can access their collections via standard decentralized wallets, such as MetaMask, even after the Nifty Gateway front-end interface is fully deactivated. The final date for full service termination is expected to be communicated soon, urging users to transition their holdings to private, non-custodial wallets.
