KuCoin, one of the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges, has made a significant strategic hire to drive its European growth, announcing the appointment of Sabina Liu, a former executive from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). Liu has been tasked with spearheading KuCoin’s expansion strategy across the European Union, with a primary mandate focused on ensuring full compliance and securing operational licenses under the imminent Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation.
Liu’s background in traditional finance, particularly her deep experience in market infrastructure and regulatory affairs gained during her tenure at LSEG, positions her as a crucial asset for KuCoin as the exchange navigates complex regulatory landscapes. The MiCA framework, set to revolutionize crypto operations across the EU bloc by providing a harmonized regulatory environment, requires crypto asset service providers (CASPs) to meet stringent requirements regarding governance, transparency, and consumer protection.
This appointment underscores KuCoin’s commitment to institutional credibility and regulatory alignment. In her new role, Liu will be responsible for developing KuCoin’s regulatory roadmap for Europe, engaging proactively with EU regulators, and overseeing the structural changes necessary to ensure that the exchange is fully prepared to operate legally and sustainably within the jurisdiction once MiCA is fully implemented, expected by early 2025.
