Wood’s argument centers on the inherent limitations and verifiable scarcity embedded within Bitcoin’s protocol, which she believes gold simply cannot match in the digital age.
The primary distinction lies in supply dynamics. Bitcoin has a fixed, mathematically enforced supply limit of 21 million coins, a scarcity that is transparent and auditable via code. Gold, while scarce in the immediate sense, has an unknown future supply; new mining technologies, deep-sea exploration, or even asteroid mining could theoretically introduce unpredictable quantities of the metal, diluting its value proposition as a perfect hedge. Bitcoin’s scarcity, in contrast, is absolute.
Furthermore, Wood highlights Bitcoin’s superior characteristics related to portability, divisibility, and verifiability. Transacting or securing billions of dollars in Bitcoin involves simple digital keys, making it effortlessly portable across borders. Gold, conversely, requires extensive logistical infrastructure, storage costs, and security risks. Bitcoin is also divisible down to eight decimal places (satoshis), offering utility for micro-transactions, whereas physical gold’s divisibility is cumbersome.
Ultimately, Wood argues that Bitcoin represents a ‘digital sovereign asset’—a decentralized, censorship-resistant store of value that is the most efficient form of digital gold for the modern global economy, cementing its role as the premier scarce asset of the 21st century.
