The European Commission has officially launched formal proceedings against X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, under the stringent Digital Services Act (DSA). The investigation centers on X’s alleged systemic failures in mitigating risks associated with illegal content, particularly focusing on content generated or amplified by the platform’s integrated Grok AI. EU officials are scrutinizing several key areas, including the adequacy of X’s content moderation systems, the implementation of transparency measures regarding algorithmic promotion, and the lack of sufficient resources dedicated to combating the rapid spread of illegal AI-generated material. The probe was initiated following preliminary findings suggesting X failed to address risks related to hate speech, deepfake misuse, and copyright infringement stemming from generative AI tools available on the platform. If found guilty of systemic breaches of the DSA, X could face massive financial penalties, potentially amounting to up to 6% of its global annual turnover, underscoring the EU’s serious commitment to regulating very large online platforms (VLOPs).
