ENS Labs, the core development organization behind the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), has announced a significant strategic pivot by discontinuing development on its planned Layer-2 scaling solution, Namechain. Instead of fragmenting the infrastructure, the team will focus on implementing the next major iteration, ENSv2, directly onto the robust security environment of the Ethereum mainnet (L1).
Namechain L2 was initially conceived as a dedicated rollup designed to handle the high volume of subdomain registrations and significantly reduce gas costs for routine ENS operations. However, the decision to scrap the project comes after internal review and consideration of the complexities inherent in operating a separate chain, particularly concerning security, liquidity bridging, and maintaining the highest standard of decentralization for core naming infrastructure.
This shift demonstrates ENS Labs’ commitment to maximizing security guarantees, even if it means foregoing the immediate cost reductions an L2 would have provided. By keeping the entirety of ENSv2 on Ethereum L1, the service benefits from Ethereum’s most decentralized and proven consensus mechanism.
While this ensures maximum trustlessness for domain holders, ENS Labs is expected to explore alternative mainnet optimization techniques and may leverage established, general-purpose Layer-2 rollups for peripheral services, rather than attempting to launch and maintain its own custom execution environment. The move solidifies ENS’s position as fundamental, L1-anchored infrastructure for the decentralized web.
