This call for accountability follows the recent unsealing of court documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, which included mention of Back’s name.
Malmi argued that regardless of the context or truthfulness of the appearance, the mere association of a key figure in the Bitcoin ecosystem with such a high-profile scandal creates an intolerable reputational risk. In his public statements, Malmi stressed that leaders in the decentralized, trust-minimized space must adhere to exceptionally stringent ethical standards, necessitating Back’s resignation from his role at Blockstream, a company vital to ongoing Bitcoin infrastructure development.
Adam Back, the inventor of Hashcash and a foundational figure in cryptocurrency, has strongly denied any connection or contact with Epstein or his network. Back has suggested that the reference to his name is likely spurious, potentially stemming from spam or phishing attempts, and has asserted that he has no intention of stepping down from his leadership position. Blockstream has not issued a formal statement on the matter.
