Recent discussions among Core developers and cryptographers have centered on the implementation of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) signatures to replace the current Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). While current quantum hardware lacks the necessary qubit count to execute Shor’s algorithm on a scale that would endanger private keys, proponents of the ‘quantum fix’ argue that the network must establish a migration path for legacy addresses before such technology matures. However, experts remain deeply divided on the urgency of the threat. Some analysts predict a ‘Quantum Y2K’ within the next decade, while others maintain that the engineering hurdles to building a cryptographically relevant quantum computer remain insurmountable for the foreseeable future. Despite the lack of consensus on the timeline, the inclusion of quantum-resistant frameworks in recent protocol improvement discussions marks a significant strategic pivot for the world’s largest cryptocurrency.
