Bank of America’s chief executive officer has issued a critical warning concerning the competitive threat posed by interest-bearing stablecoins to the traditional banking system. According to the CEO, if federal regulations are modified to allow stablecoin issuers to offer yield on their holdings, the U.S. banking sector could face a catastrophic exodus of liquidity, potentially seeing up to $6 trillion in deposits shift away from commercial banks and into the digital asset ecosystem.
This estimated amount highlights the massive competitive pressure stablecoins would exert, particularly on low-yield products like savings accounts and Money Market Funds (MMFs). Stablecoins, which are typically pegged 1:1 to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar, currently function primarily as a medium of exchange within the crypto sphere and usually do not offer returns to the holder. However, discussions around comprehensive stablecoin regulation, often addressing reserve requirements and consumer protection, could inadvertently grant these issuers the ability to generate and pass along yields derived from the backing assets.
The CEO argued that such a development would create an unequal playing field, drawing a substantial portion of the commercial banking system’s deposit base and hindering banks’ ability to lend. A sudden and large-scale deposit flight would severely impact the liquidity necessary for banks to sustain lending operations, potentially leading to a significant tightening of credit conditions across the economy. The warning underscores the urgency for policymakers and financial regulators to establish clear, prudent guidelines for digital assets that account for systemic risks and ensure the continued stability of the traditional fractional reserve banking system.
