A Canadian citizen has fallen victim to a sophisticated multi-stage cryptocurrency fraud, beginning at a physical Bitcoin ATM and concluding with a secondary recovery scam. The incident began when the victim was coerced by individuals posing as government officials to withdraw cash and deposit it into a local cryptocurrency kiosk to ‘secure’ their funds. Following the initial theft, the victim attempted to find a way to reclaim the lost assets by searching for professional assistance online. This led them to a fraudulent ‘recovery service’ that claimed to possess the technical tools required to reverse blockchain transactions. The victim was then defrauded a second time after paying upfront ‘processing fees’ to these scammers, who eventually ceased all communication. Law enforcement agencies are using this case to warn the public that once cryptocurrency is transferred, it is nearly impossible to retrieve, and that any service promising guaranteed recovery for an upfront cost is almost certainly a secondary scam.
