The United States Department of Justice has initiated a civil forfeiture action to recover approximately $327,485 in Tether (USDt) linked to a sophisticated cryptocurrency romance scam, often referred to as “pig butchering.” According to court documents, the funds were traced to a digital wallet allegedly used to launder proceeds from victims who were manipulated into making fraudulent investments. These scams typically involve bad actors building emotional trust with victims over long periods before convincing them to deposit funds into controlled, fake platforms. This recovery effort underscores the U.S. government’s intensified focus on tracking illicit digital asset flows and returning stolen funds to victims of international cyber-fraud syndicates.
