As Valentine’s Day approaches, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is urging the public to stay vigilant against ‘romance scams,’ emphasizing that genuine romantic interests will not ask for financial assistance in the form of cryptocurrency. These fraudulent schemes often involve scammers creating fake online profiles to establish emotional bonds with victims before eventually soliciting funds for fabricated emergencies or fraudulent investment opportunities, a tactic often referred to as ‘pig butchering.’ According to federal authorities, victims lose hundreds of millions of dollars each year to these sophisticated operations. The DOJ advises individuals to be wary of anyone who refuses to meet in person, creates a sense of urgency regarding money, or claims to have ‘inside information’ about crypto markets. Victims are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
