**Casts:** The basic unit of communication on Farcaster, similar to a tweet or a post. Casts are cryptographic messages signed by the user’s private key.

**Frames:** Perhaps the most innovative feature, Farcaster Frames are interactive mini-applications embedded directly within a Cast. Frames transform static social posts into dynamic experiences, allowing users to mint NFTs, participate in polls, play games, or execute Web3 transactions without ever leaving the social feed. Frames are a major driver of composability and utility within the ecosystem.

### The Ecosystem and Significance

Farcaster is a protocol, meaning it is a foundational layer, not a single application. This open nature encourages permissionless development of competing client applications, such as Warpcast (currently the most popular client), Supercast, and others.
