Gloria Zhao, one of the most prominent contributors and core maintainers of Bitcoin Core, has announced her decision to step down from her high-responsibility role after dedicating nearly six years to the project. Zhao was primarily known for her deep expertise in Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer (P2P) networking layer and mempool management policies, areas critical to the stability and performance of the network.
Zhao’s tenure was marked by her leadership on several key technical initiatives. Most notably, she championed the development and standardization of Package Relay, a crucial feature designed to improve transaction throughput and enable complex smart contract constructions by allowing dependent transactions to be broadcast simultaneously. She also played a significant role in developing consensus around transaction relay policy changes, including the v3 transaction relay proposal.
Serving as a maintainer placed Zhao among a small group of developers entrusted with reviewing, merging, and signing off on code contributions for the flagship Bitcoin software. Her efforts were instrumental in ensuring code quality and the cautious, incremental progression of the codebase.
While stepping away from the intense duties of a maintainer, Zhao indicated that she intends to remain involved in open-source development and the wider Bitcoin ecosystem, albeit in a less demanding capacity. Her departure represents a notable shift in the leadership structure of the Bitcoin Core development community and a temporary loss of one of its most respected technical leaders in networking infrastructure.
