Tether Will Keep Adding to $24 Billion Gold Stash Held in Former Nuclear Bunker, Says CEO

Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, USDT, has confirmed its commitment to significantly expand its substantial physical gold holdings, currently valued at approximately $24 billion. CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the company views gold accumulation as a critical pillar of its reserve management strategy and intends to continue expanding the hoard, which is famously stored in a former, high-security nuclear bunker.

This decision underscores Tether’s philosophy of holding tangible, non-digital assets as a primary safeguard for the stability of the stablecoin. The physical gold reserves serve as a direct countermeasure against market volatility and the counterparty risks associated with traditional financial systems.

Ardoino emphasized that Tether’s strategy focuses on absolute security and diversification. “We are committed to increasing our gold reserves. It provides unmatched security and diversification for our users. We don’t rely on paper promises; we hold the actual metal in highly secure, non-traditional facilities,” he noted during a recent briefing.

The unusual storage location—a repurposed nuclear fallout bunker, often rumored to be located in Switzerland or a similar neutral jurisdiction—highlights Tether’s dedication to self-custody and extreme resilience. These facilities offer military-grade protection and isolation from potential geopolitical or localized banking failures, reinforcing the notion that the reserves are unencumbered and fully accessible.

As stablecoin reserve transparency comes under increasing regulatory scrutiny globally, Tether’s aggressive accumulation and secure storage of physical gold differentiates its reserve structure and is intended to build greater confidence among institutional and retail stablecoin users regarding the full backing of USDT.
