Crypto payments adoption spearheaded by large businesses, PayPal survey finds

A new survey conducted by PayPal suggests that the widespread integration of cryptocurrency as a payment method is being driven primarily by large enterprises rather than small or medium-sized businesses (SMEs). The findings indicate a significant divergence in digital currency strategy based on corporate scale and revenue.

The survey, which polled hundreds of businesses across North America and Europe, found that companies generating over $500 million in annual revenue are the most aggressive in both accepting cryptocurrencies for goods and services and holding them on their balance sheets. Approximately 62% of these large corporations reported either having already integrated crypto payment solutions or planning to do so within the next 12 months, citing global reach and enhanced transaction speeds as primary motivators.

In contrast, only 31% of SMEs expressed similar intentions, suggesting that current barriers—such as perceived regulatory ambiguity, technical integration complexity, and volatility concerns—remain more challenging for smaller operations. For major retailers and technology platforms, however, the benefits of bypassing traditional banking infrastructures for cross-border transactions and attracting younger, digitally native consumer segments outweigh these risks.

The report concludes that while initial consumer adoption focused heavily on investment, the next phase of crypto maturity will involve its rapid acceptance as an operational tool by Fortune 500-level companies. This institutional validation is expected to normalize the use of digital assets and pave the way for broader societal acceptance of crypto payments.
