Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman of MicroStrategy and one of the cryptocurrency world’s most prominent Bitcoin maximalists, has issued a stark warning that the greatest existential threat to Bitcoin (BTC) is posed not by external regulation or competing digital assets, but by internal forces attempting to modify the core protocol. Saylor reserves his harshest criticism for what he terms ‘opportunists’ who seek to introduce foundational changes.

Speaking on the necessity of immutability, Saylor argues that Bitcoin’s primary value proposition as a perfect form of digital scarcity relies entirely on its unchangeable nature. He views any attempt to alter the monetary policy, the block size, or the issuance schedule as an attack on the integrity of the network, driven primarily by short-term financial motives rather than genuine security concerns.

“The moment you prove you can change the protocol, you immediately open the door for continuous lobbying and political manipulation,” Saylor stated. He maintains that if the community successfully changes the underlying code, Bitcoin ceases to be truly immutable digital property and risks becoming a political currency susceptible to human intervention—the very problem it was designed to solve.

Saylor emphasizes that Bitcoin is a completed engineering project, analogous to a fundamental physical constant. He stresses that all scaling efforts and necessary innovation should take place on Layer 2 solutions, such as the Lightning Network. According to his analysis, adherence to the established protocol is non-negotiable, and internal division caused by opportunists pushing for base layer alterations represents a far more profound and lasting risk than any government crackdown or market volatility.
