Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has intensified his long-running critique of traditional Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) governance, stating that the current reliance on pure token-holder voting is insufficient and leads to plutocratic outcomes. Buterin argues that for DAOs to achieve true legitimacy and resilience, they must transition toward “different and better” governance mechanisms that decouple influence from financial stake.
In his analysis, Buterin highlighted that the standard one-token, one-vote system inevitably concentrates decision-making power among the wealthiest holders, fostering both voter apathy among smaller participants and a governance structure easily subject to capture by large entities. He stressed that DAOs must be designed to withstand this influence, ensuring that governance reflects broader community interest rather than just financial incentive.
To address these flaws, Buterin strongly advocates for the widespread adoption of non-financialized identity systems and reputation-based credentials. He pointed specifically to mechanisms like Soulbound Tokens (SBTs), which can represent non-transferable commitments, skills, or participation history. Integrating these non-transferable metrics could allow DAOs to assign voting power based on proven merit or dedicated involvement rather than asset size.
Furthermore, Buterin champions advanced voting protocols such as Quadratic Voting (QV), which reduces the power of concentrated wealth by making subsequent votes exponentially more expensive. He encourages the DAO community to accelerate experimentation with multi-chamber governance, weighted voting, and mechanisms designed explicitly to reward active contribution, signaling a shift necessary for DAOs to evolve into robust, socially legitimate organizations.
