Germany’s DZ Bank, the country’s second-largest financial institution and the central organization for its cooperative banking network, has successfully secured a full license under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation. This landmark approval, granted by the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), permits DZ Bank to operate its institutional digital asset custody platform, ‘meinKrypto.’
The ‘meinKrypto’ platform is designed to provide secure and compliant custody services for cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. The primary initial beneficiaries are the hundreds of cooperative banks (Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken) that use DZ Bank as their central clearing and service provider. The license ensures that these local banks can seamlessly integrate crypto services into their own offerings for retail and corporate customers, relying on DZ Bank’s regulated infrastructure.
This achievement places DZ Bank among the first major European financial institutions to receive full licensing under the new MiCA framework, which is set to standardize crypto asset regulation across all EU member states. Securing this license ahead of MiCA’s full implementation schedule allows DZ Bank to establish a significant foothold in the regulated European crypto market and solidifies Germany’s role as a proactive jurisdiction in digital finance compliance.
